MEP Roger Helmer

Name: Roger Helmer

Constiuency: East Midlands, MEP

Current issue: May 2011, he claimed that there’s different levels of rape, and that rape within a relationship is not as serious as a sexual attack committed by a stranger. There have been calls for his resignation, though that has not happened yet.

“The second is “date rape”. Imagine that a woman voluntarily goes to her boyfriend’s apartment, voluntarily goes into the bedroom, voluntarily undresses and gets into bed, perhaps anticipating sex, or naïvely expecting merely a cuddle. But at the last minute she gets cold feet and says “Stop!”. The young man, in the heat of the moment, is unable to restrain himself and carries on. In both cases an offence has been committed, and the perpetrators deserve to be convicted and punished. But whereas in the first case, I’d again be quite happy to hang the guy, I think that most right-thinking people would expect a much lighter sentence in the second case. Rape is always wrong, but not always equally culpable”

Previous statements of note: (WARNING – this list may be long)

To a 17 year old girl wanting to be a vet asking about seal culling:

“I am not prepared to join the seal campaign, because while I agree that the culling of seals by beating them over the head is not very pleasing and aesthetic, I think it is probably fairly quick and humane…

I challenge the use of your term “innocent baby seals”, because

(A) Seals are not morally competent, and therefore cannot be innocent or guilty;

(B) I think it is mawkish, sentimental and unhelpful to adopt a “Bambi” attitude to animals, or to seek to anthropomorphise them – I wonder if you would have the same sentimental view of rats or tarantulas? – if not, why not?

(C) In one sense the seals are guilty (without any moral responsibility), for damaging fish stocks and the livelihoods of local fishermen.

“Your sympathy for dumb animals does you credit, but my advice would be that you save your concerns for people rather than animals.”1

LGBT issues:

“Homophobia” is merely a propaganda device designed to denigrate and stigmatise those holding conventional opinions, which have been held by most people through most of recorded history.”2 (to clarify, he does claim to be liberal and tolerant of homosexuality, though does not support gay marriage, but claims that the word homophobia has no meaning)

“Why is it OK for a surgeon to perform a sex-change operation, but not OK for a psychiatrist to try to “turn” a consenting homosexual?” via Twitter, Jan 2011 2

The Catholic Church

Following the Pope’s visit to the UK last year, he stated that the Catholic Church is “systematically paedophile”. He has since apologized for that statement.
